Chapter Fifteen
Daniel
The students were just packing away when Marjorieâs voice rang out as clear as a bell across the lecture hall. âMr. Smith? A word if I may?â
I was usually safe from her ire while I was teaching, which meant that whatever it was she was so keen to talk to me about, she deemed it urgent. I racked my brain to try and work out what I could possibly have done. Despite the mental effort it took to leave Frankie on his own, Iâd been on time all week, so it wasnât that. I was up to date on my grading. I hadnât had a disagreement with anyone. My office was about as tidy as it ever got.
I kept one eye on her while the number of students thinned. She was like a little storm cloud at the back of the lecture hall. She only needed a dalmatian coat, and she could have been Cruella De Vil. Was that it? Did she want me to hand Napoleon over so that she could make him into a pair of gloves? I quelled the urge to smile at the ridiculous thought.
Finally, there was no delaying my date with the snow queen any longer, and I was forced to make my way toward the back of the lecture hall where Marjorie waited expectantly. What did she think would happen if she waited outside? Did she think I would climb out of the window in a bid to avoid her? I came to a halt in front of her and offered her a huge smile. To my surprise, she returned it. Well, that was weird. I couldnât remember ever seeing her smile before. And if she had, it certainly wouldnât have been directed my way. Was she ill? âYou parked in one of the reserved spots this morning, Mr. Smith.â
So, that was it. Crimes against parking. Except, she was still smiling at me. âAll the other spots were taken.â
She nodded. âThey were, but one was just a delivery driver dropping off some packages.â
Christ! Was there anything she didnât know? What did she do, spend the morning watching all the CCTV footage from around the university just on the off-chance that she might find some good blackmail material? âI didnât think it would make that much difference.â
She gave another nod, her red hair catching the light. âIâm afraid it does. Iâm going to have to ask you to move it, please.â
Please! She never said please. It wasnât her style. I tamped down on the urge to press my palm to her forehead to find out if she was running a fever.
âNow?â
âYes, please.â
âOkay. It will only take me a couple of minutes.â I slid my hand into my pocket and dug out my car keys, already pushing the lecture room door open to make my way to the faculty and staff car park. It soon became apparent that Marjorie was going to follow me. Did she have that little trust in me? It seemed she did.
